She&#8217;s eager to meet new people and expand her knowledge of major diseases worldwide. Amala is excited to gain hands-on experience with the latest medical technologies, such as performing an upper endoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, and learning how to draw blood. She feels blessed to have been given such an incredible opportunity and hopes to utilize her talents to make a difference in the medical field.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 200;\">Amala is a rising sophomore at Enloe Magnet High School, and she is a resilient and determined young woman with a passion for helping those in need. She has participated in medical programs like HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and MBSA (Medical Bioscience Academy), where she has learned about anatomy, diseases, disorders, and diagnosing patients based on symptoms. Amala also actively takes part in FBLA and Key Club. FBLA has taught her to be financially aware and develop business skills. With Key Club, Amala has learned how to engage with and support many people through various volunteering and service opportunities. She is also a talented singer, pianist, and photographer, earning excellence awards in her choir programs and honorary mentions for her photography. wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">The Advanced Medical &amp; Public Health Internship diagnosis is the first-ever program of its kind. I not only got to work with the top medical professionals from around the world, but I had the unique opportunity to learn about and practice patient examination, evaluation, and diagnosis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">Through virtual reality technology, I was connected with a clinic and maternity ward in Bauchi State, Nigeria where I was able to interact with my patients in real-time. Supervised by a doctor in Nigeria, I examined &amp; diagnosed my patient using my diagnostic training on the top 4 leading causes of death in Nigeria; malaria, typhoid fever, nutritional anemia, &amp; acute respiratory infections (ARI).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">These patients were locals from Bauchi State that were all ill and would normally not be able to afford medical treatment as they earn $1.25 a day or less. I also developed cultural competencies and a global perspective to assess the structural and social determinants of health that underlie these diseases.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">With the help of collaborating directly with development and public health experts to develop an impactful educational public health campaign. The campaign is specifically tailored to address the needs of underserved communities in Bauchi, aiming to raise awareness about Malaria and promote positive behavioral changes. Throughout the internship, I immersed myself in rigorous research and analysis to ensure the campaign&#8217;s effectiveness and relevance to the local population.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">The process of creating the public health campaign was both challenging and rewarding. I conducted in-depth research on prevalent health concerns in the targeted communities, identifying key areas where intervention and awareness were essential for improving public health outcomes. Presenting my research proposal about Malaria&#8217;s Diagnosis to a panel of esteemed judges allowed me to demonstrate the depth of my understanding and commitment to the cause. Using this simulator allowed me to practice placing a needle in a vein to draw blood with realistic tissue-like material that imitates vein-wall resistance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"clinical-skills-column-para has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.2\">During this exercise, the medical facilitator instructed me on the proper technique and helped me improve the communication skills that I will use with future patients.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column clinical-skills-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lichangesummer.org\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0002_AMani-Lap.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9246\" width=\"311\" height=\"404\"\/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"clinical-skills-column-heading tow\">Laparoscopy<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"clinical-skills-column-para has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.2\">I learned about laparoscopy, which is a minimally invasive operation that allows physicians to observe and assess the abdomen or pelvis using small incisions and cameras.
