She is eager to immerse herself in the program to learn more about equity and medicine with others who are also interested in the same area. She is also very glad to have the opportunity to interact with a patient in Africa to diagnose and recommend future treatment and prevention. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 200;\">As a rising senior at Walton High School, Vidya is a dedicated and hard-working student enrolled in both Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Currently, she is in multiple clubs and extracurriculars which she has participated in since freshmen year as an active student in school. She is in HOSA, where she placed 4th in her event at the state level her junior year with her group and has applied to become a board member of the club at her school. She also currently holds the position of president of the Young Women in Biology Club where she finds activities and volunteer opportunities for her club members to participate in. She is a member of Astronomy Club, Chemistry Club, and Global Connections Club. She loves doing volunteer work and thus is a part of Habitat for Humanity where she helps fundraise and build houses for families, Books without Borders where she collects and organizes books to be sent to Africa, Random Acts of Kindness where she promotes well-being and kindness in her school, and Community Outreach where she volunteers at a senior living home on the weekends. Outside of school she also volunteers at Grady Memorial Hospital during her summers, assisting the staff and interacting with patients. She participates in Badminton Club at her school and has also achieved a third-degree blackbelt in Taekwondo. She also teaches Taekwondo classes to others at her dojo that she goes to throughout the week after school. Over summers she has also participated in Girls Who Code to gain knowledge in coding and form connections with other girls and women. Additionally, she has applied for a leadership position as Ambassador at her school and applied for NHS at her school. She is also a student in the STEM academy at her school in the biomedical sciences pathway. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 200;\">Vidya is looking forward to participating in program and make new friends as well as learn new information. In the future, Vidya aspires to be in the science field of study conducting research to find information and help the world advance further. She hopes to help all those in the world have proper treatment if they were to need it. wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column my-research-proposal-presentation-right-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">In the Advanced Medical &#038; Public Health Internship I had the privilege to collaborate with leading medical professionals from around the world and gain hands-on experience in patient examination, evaluation, and diagnosis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">Using telehealth technology, I connected with a clinic and maternity ward in Bauchi State, Nigeria, where I engaged with patients in real time. Under the supervision of a Nigerian doctor, I applied my diagnostic training to address the four leading causes of death in Nigeria: malaria, typhoid fever, nutritional anemia, and acute respiratory infections (ARI).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">The patients I worked with were local residents of Bauchi State, many of whom could not normally afford medical care, earning $1.25 per day or less. Additionally, I developed cultural competencies and a global perspective, enabling me to assess the structural and social determinants of health underlying these diseases.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">Collaborating directly with development and public health experts, I helped create an impactful educational public health campaign tailored to the needs of underserved communities in Bauchi. The campaign focused on ARIs and promoting positive behavioral changes. Throughout the internship, I engaged in rigorous research and analysis to ensure the campaign\u2019s effectiveness and relevance to the local population.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3\">The process of developing the public health campaign was both challenging and rewarding. I conducted in-depth research on prevalent health concerns in the Gwallagan Mayaka and Kandahar communities, identifying key areas where intervention and awareness were essential for improving public health outcomes. Presenting my research proposal about ARIs Diagnosis and Treatment to a panel of esteemed judges allowed me to demonstrate the depth of my understanding and commitment to the cause. The experience not only bolstered my presentation and communication skills but also reaffirmed my passion for public health and the potential positive impact such initiatives can have on communities around the world.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light clinical-skills\" style=\"min-height:50px;aspect-ratio:unset;\" id=\"clinicals\"><span style=\"font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.2\">I trained in phlebotomy using a realistic arm simulator, practicing needle placement to draw blood from veins that mimic real vein-wall resistance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"clinical-skills-column-para has-custom-lineheight\" style=\"font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.2\">With guidance from a medical facilitator, I refined my technique and improved my communication skills for interacting with future patients.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column understanding the technology&#8217;s function, I had the unique opportunity to perform a simulated laparoscopy, applying my knowledge in a practical setting.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div
