The International Public Health Internship

To ensure equitable health for all, Leadership Initiatives works with local leaders to spread health-oriented education in communities in Northern Nigeria. As part of the International Public Health Program, Leadership Initiatives identifies the major threats to public health and the stakeholders most impacted.

Once public health issues are identified, Leadership Initiatives pairs International Public Health Interns with local health specialists and project coordinators. Interns are given the opportunity to help tackle major issues at the grassroots level by working directly with community leaders to develop and implement public health awareness campaigns. Interns will work with Leadership Initiatives staff over the course of nine months to understand the health care system in Nigeria. Leadership Initiatives partners with local health care institutions to hold educational programs that target major health concerns relevant to Nigeria, such as immunization, reproductive health, diabetes, food and nutrition, child health, drug dependencies, food, hygiene, and malaria.

The International Public Health Internship strives to empower young leaders to improve health worldwide by equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully save lives, develop ethical considerations, and enrich communities all while making a meaningful difference in the world. Through working with interns, Leadership Initiatives enables communities to invest in the necessary infrastructure to address public health concerns that burden developing regions.

Our Public Health Issue

Malnutrition

Our Public Health Issue

Marasmus results from a deficiency of all macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) in the body. It mostly affects young children in developing countries, especially infants that are 3-9 months old. This is due to inadequate feeding, leading to starvation. However, adults may also be susceptible to this issue. Marasmus is described as severe malnutrition, and is often diagnosed in the later stages when symptoms are able to be seen. These include emaciation, loose skin, and hair loss.

Once Marasmus is diagnosed, the treatment is fairly simple. It consists of a special feeding and rehydration plan, and close medical observation. Normally, those in treatment are able to recover within 2 months.

Fast Facts

Common symptoms of marasmus include weight loss, stunted growth, dry skin and eyes and low blood pressure and body temperatures.

Marasmus can be identified through physical examinations and lab tests to check blood cell counts or blood glucose levels.

Treatment for marasmus begins with rehydration then nutritional rehabilitation which involves increasing nutrient intake through a protein diet.

Nearly 30% of humans currently experience one of more types of malnutrition including marasmus.

Slide thumbnail

Health In Nigeria

In Nigeria, marasmus is a significant problem, particularly in rural areas where access to nutritious food is limited. About 45% of deaths for children under five are due to malnutrition. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor infrastructure, inadequate food supply, and lack of access to clean water. In order to address this issue, it is important for the Nigerian government and other organizations to provide access to nutritious food and clean water, as well as education about proper nutrition and hygiene.

Our Impact

The International Public Health Internship has helped fundraise money for those in need of healthcare in developing countries.

Through our fundraisers, we made an impact and contribution to our community in hopes to bring awareness through workshops and other initiatives towards public health. By the end of the term, we aim to raise $750 for local communities in countries like Northern Nigeria.

During the internship, our team has created a survey that was conducted in our target communities in Nigeria. With these results, we planned and coordinated a workshop that works towards educating our target audience about Marasmus.

GOAL

Sub-Saharan Africa has experienced some of the highest growth rates globally over the past 10 years. While this means that people in these nations have become more optimistic about their social and economic future, the region continues to face a myriad of historical problems. In order to continue steady growth and achieve a future of equitable conditions in the region, our International Internship Program team seeks to build stronger communities from the grassroots level through fundraising for community development.

Funds raised are used to implement community-based education programs, pay staff to run the operations on-site, and invest in training for local leaders. Leadership Initiatives uses fundraised money to develop a network of support for actionable change and accountability between our team, the Leadership Initiatives staff, and the community stakeholders we work with.
