In Partnership With The Nagari Medical Clinic & Maternity Ward In Bauchi State, Nigeria
The Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship diagnosis is the first-ever program of its kind. I not only got to work with the top medical professionals from around the world, but also save lives.
Through telemedicine, I was connected with a clinic and maternity ward in Bauchi State, Nigeria where I was able to interact with my patients in real-time. Supervised by a doctor in Nigeria, I examined & diagnosed my patient using my diagnostic training on the top 4 leading causes of death in Nigeria; malaria, typhoid fever, nutritional anemia, & acute respiratory infections (ARI).
These patients were locals from Bauchi State that were all ill and would normally not be able to afford medical treatment as they earn $1.25 a day or less. In return for working with our participants, all of their treatments were funded by Leadership Initiatives.
In 2022, Leadership Initiatives was able to fund the treatment of all patients participating in this program.
My Diagnosis
My Patient's
Diagnosis
Hauwa Isa is a 32 year old mother of three living who is studying library science and information science. She had a heart rate of 84 beats per minutes. Additionally, Hauwa presented with a fever of 37.3 degrees celsius, abdominal pain, and headache.
After running the appropriate diagnostic tests, I concluded that Hauwa was suffering from malaria. To treat the malaria, I prescribed CoArtem.
In addition to this treatment, I recommended various methods of prevention. To prevent future cases of malaria, I suggested that the patient avoid mosquito bites through clothing, like long sleeves and pants, mosquito nets, and malaria prevention drugs, if accessible.

Phlebotomy
I learned how to draw blood using a phlebotomy arm simulator. Using this simulator allowed me to practice placing a needle in a vein to draw blood with realistic tissue-like material that imitates vein-wall resistance.
During this exercise, the medical facilitator instructed me on the proper technique and helped me improve the communication skills that I will use with future patients.
Ultrasound
I worked with Dr. Garba to utilize a real ultrasound machine to develop the psychomotor skills needed to handle ultrasound probes, as well as explore multiple pathologies and the corresponding diagnostic imaging.
After receiving an introductory course in ultrasounds, I was able to apply the skills needed to interpret ultrasound images, make diagnoses, and clinical decision making.
Intubation
I also worked with EMT instructors to learn how to perform multiple times of emergency resuscitation techniques including a manual esophageal intubation and a manual resuscitation airway mask.
The EMT helped me understand the proper situations to utilize different resuscitation and breathing assistance techniques and the proper equipment needed.

Our team began the business development process by having a one-on-one Zoom call directly with our business partner, [BP Name], and Nigerian project coordinator to ensure productive collaboration.
We learned more about [BP pronouns] life, family, and desires for the proposed business venture, as well as the challenges [BP pronouns] were facing.
By discussing first-hand the challenges our partner faced, our team successfully and efficiently began to brainstorm solutions to launch her business.
Each morning we held constructive discussions about our ideas, the advice we received the day before, and the timeline necessary to begin implementing our ideas in real-time.
I had the opportunity to visit the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, where I learned culturally-relevant knowledge that my team and I applied to our development solutions.
We began our visit with a traditional Nigerian lunch of jollof rice, egusi, moi moi, boli, and traditionally cooked chicken.
Then, we received a briefing regarding NIgerian culture and business embassy officials and top executives.
We concluded our visit by speaking with embassy officials to discuss our business partner and the potential growth of their industry.
Our team met with leading experts in the field of business and economic development from the State Department, Exxon, Harvard University, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, and top US companies and nonprofits.
These leaders included Dr. Sarah Stiles, Professor and Provost at Georgetown University, and Tiffany Norwood, serial entrepreneur with seven startups and nearly a billion dollars in funding under her belt.
With their guidance, we streamlined our initial ideas to further our efforts in launching the venture our business partner envisioned.
Our team advanced our communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through hands-on project management and development.
Our team pitched the final proposal to a panel of expert judges from Harvard University, the Leadership Initiatives Nigerian Development Team, and the Leadership Initiatives Grant Committee.
This formal pitch allowed our team to practice our skills and utilize our entrepreneurial toolkit, all while showcasing our efforts to transform the business we partnered with.
At the end of the pitch, we were able to receive feedback on our proposal for our business partner.
Over the next year, our business partner’s venture will be made into reality and monitored for sustained success and growth.
