Abdullahi Abbas

About Abdullahi

Abdullahi received his training as an apprentice for eight years. While growing up, he had an interest in art and spent his free time drawing on paper, with people often admiring his designs. With a passion for artwork, Abdullahi decided to learn digital printing designs and sought out an experienced designer and printer in his community. Abdullahi became an apprentice under Saeed Badamasi Aminu, who owns a printing press company on Ahmadu Bello Way, Bauchi.

The first thing he learned from his boss was direct image printing, and he mastered operating all the machines through careful observation. Over time, Abdullahi became highly skilled in all aspects of design and printing. Throughout his apprenticeship, he learned valuable lessons in work ethics, honesty, and delivering quality services. Abdullahi is now a skilled designer and printer, ready to make a significant impact in his field.

Business Goals

One day, Abdullahi aspires for his printing press enterprise to flourish, becoming a beacon of opportunity for the youth in his community. His vision extends beyond mere profit; he envisions a platform for others to chase their dreams and carve their paths to financial independence. With aspirations to expand, he envisions establishing additional outlets in diverse communities, enriching customer choices and accessibility.

Abdullahi's foremost aspiration is to construct his own home, envisioning it as a sanctuary where his family can flourish and find solace. Moreover, he is deeply committed to facilitating his wife's educational pursuits, recognizing the value of empowering her to attain a degree beyond her current diploma. Providing avenues for the youth in his community is another pivotal goal for Abdullahi; he is determined to offer employment opportunities within his business, enabling them to earn their own income and pursue their aspirations.

Obstacles

Running a printing press business in Bauchi State, Nigeria presents Abdullahi with several significant challenges. Firstly, dealing with demanding customers who are difficult to satisfy regardless of his efforts poses a continuous source of frustration and potential conflict. Their expectations often exceed realistic timelines and specifications, making it challenging to maintain customer satisfaction while balancing quality and efficiency.

Moreover, the printing industry in Bauchi State faces logistical challenges such as obtaining timely and affordable access to quality printing materials and equipment maintenance. Limited local suppliers and unreliable transportation infrastructure contribute to delays and increased operational costs. Additionally, navigating bureaucratic procedures to secure necessary licenses and permits for operating a printing press can be time-consuming and bureaucratic.

Home & Family

Abdullahi resides in a modest rented room and parlor apartment in the Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate in Bauchi with his wife and their delightful 2-year-old daughter, Aisha. Their mornings begin with Abdullahi's devout observance of Islamic prayers, which sets a spiritual tone for the day ahead. Following his prayers, Abdullahi attends to any pending work commitments from the comfort of his humble abode, using his trusty laptop as a tool for productivity.

This allows him to manage orders, communicate with clients, and plan his schedule efficiently without leaving home. Despite the challenges of running a printing press business, Abdullahi finds solace in the support of his loving family and the quietude of their home environment, which fosters a sense of focus and determination in his work.

Our Partnership

Abdullahi has faced many struggles throughout his life, including the loss of both parents to illness. Despite these challenges, he worked hard and, with the support of an uncle, managed to pay his school fees until he graduated. His life took a significant turn when he started as an apprentice in a printing press business. Now, he is no longer an apprentice and is ready to move forward in his career. Abdullahi is very happy and excited to partner with Leadership Initiatives. After spending eight years in the printing press business, he hopes that this partnership will help him start a new chapter in his life. He dreams of becoming his own boss and looks forward to the day when he can give back to his community.

In Abdullahi's words, "Working with the Leadership Initiatives and the interns will be a great opportunity for me and I am happy to be among the people that will be working with this organization. I hope through this partnership, I would be able to be an example to people who are struggling without any help that with dedication and a little support, one can be successful.”

My Grant Proposal
Presentation

In the International Leadership and Business Internship, I worked directly with some of the world’s leading developmental experts in order to build my partners business and brand.

At the conclusion of this internship, our team pitched the final proposal to a panel of esteemed judges from the Leadership Initiatives Nigerian Development Team and the Leadership Initiatives Grant Committee. This formal pitch allowed our team to practice our skills and utilize our entrepreneurial toolkit, all while showcasing our efforts to transform the business we partnered with.

At the end of the pitch, we were able to receive feedback on our proposal for our business partner. Over the next year, our business partner’s venture will be made into reality and monitored for sustained success and growth.

Internship Highlights

Our team began the business development process by having a one-on-one Zoom call directly with our business partner,Abdullahi Abbas, and our Nigerian project coordinator to ensure productive collaboration.

We learned more about their life, family, and desires for the proposed business venture, as well as the challenges they were facing. By discussing first-hand the challenges our partner faced, our team successfully and efficiently began to brainstorm solutions to launch her business.

Each morning we held constructive discussions about our ideas, the advice we received the day before, and the timeline necessary to begin implementing our ideas in real-time.

The on-staff project coordinators and business development experts helped facilitate the ideation process and ensured our team asked the right questions to produce tangible results.

I had the unique opportunity to visit the Guyanese Embassy, where I learned about diplomatic relations between Guyana and the United States.

The embassy serves as a hub for collaboration with partner countries and international organizations, which facilitates the creation of solutions to address global issues, such as poverty, gender inequality, and climate change.

Guyanese diplomats and officials work closely with local communities to identify needs and design programs that empower individuals and enhance overall societal well-being. This community-centered problem-solving is something my team and I aspired towards while crafting our business proposal.

I also visited the Mali’s Embassy to learn about the role that Mali plays in domestic and international development work. We discussed critical topics including investments, international trade, and human rights.

While touring the embassy, I learned about the wide range of policy issues and gained a better understanding of the embassy’s role in international development through sustainable and inclusive initiatives.

My visit to the Mali’s Embassy was not only educational, but inspiring. It allowed me to see Mali’s pivotal role in advancing international development and how I can implement their ideals into my own work.

Our team met with leading experts in the fields of business and economic development from Johns Hopkins University, the State Department, and GlobalGiving.

One such expert was Carla Brooks, Business and Development Officer at Johns Hopkins Center for Communications Program. She provided us with a crash course in advertising and marketing, in which we learned essential components of an effective marketing campaign.

Our work with Ms. Brooks was essential in preparing us for our culminating pitch deck presentation. With her and other expert guidance, we streamlined our initial ideas to further our efforts in launching the venture our business partner envisioned.

By the end of the week, we had incorporated the advice of leading experts from across the globe for our business proposal to empower and transform the life of our business partner.
