Hamidu Mohammed Bukar

About Hamidu

Hamidu's journey into the world of barbering began after he completed his secondary education, with a desire to turn his passion into his livelihood. Eager to kickstart his career and secure a source of income, he wasted no time in apprenticing at his friend's barbershop, immersing himself in the art of grooming and styling. Among the reasons that draw Hamidu to his craft, one of the most cherished is the opportunity it affords him to forge meaningful connections with clients, guiding them towards a hairstyle that not only enhances their appearance but also bolsters their self-assurance and inner confidence.

Hamidu trained as an apprentice for two years in his friend's barbershop. Before apprenticing, he visited the shop daily, observing how his friend barbed and interacted with customers. Once he became an apprentice, he taught himself discipline by waking up early to clean the shop and ensure everything was in place. He also learned customer relations with the hopes of attracting new customers through referrals. Hamidu gained valuable insights into running and managing a barbershop effectively. His parents encouraged him in this pursuit so he could become financially independent.

Business Goals

Hamidu allocates the bulk of his earnings towards essential expenses such as food, clothing, transportation, hospital bills, recharge cards, internet data, and providing support to his siblings and parents, recognizing the importance of familial and personal obligations. However, amidst these financial commitments, he remains steadfast in his belief that his collaboration with Leadership Initiatives will further the growth of his business, affording him the means to attain the lifestyle he has long envisioned. With unwavering optimism, Hamidu envisions using the success of his enterprise as a way to give back to his community, viewing his business not only as a source of personal prosperity but also as a conduit for positive impact and social responsibility within his local area.

Obstacles

Operating a barber shop in Bauchi State, Nigeria poses several formidable challenges for a small business owner. Firstly, securing consistent access to quality grooming supplies such as clippers, razors, and hair products can be problematic due to irregular supply chains and price fluctuations. Secondly, obtaining the necessary permits and licenses from local authorities can be a bureaucratic process, often requiring time and resources that could otherwise be invested in business operations. Thirdly, attracting and retaining skilled barbers can be difficult, as qualified personnel may be scarce and demand competitive wages.

Home & Family

Hamidu is a 38-year-old married man who lives with his wife in a room and parlor apartment in the Yelwan Makaranta community of Bauchi. As the eldest of six siblings, everyone in his family looks up to him. His father works as a non-academic staff at the University of Maiduguri, and his mother is an Islamic teacher.

Every morning, Hamidu wakes up for prayers according to Islamic rites, then takes a nap before finally getting up at 7:00 AM to prepare for work. After breakfast, he gives his wife money for the day's meals and heads to the barbershop. Hamidu has been very supportive of his parents and siblings. He is currently sponsoring one of his younger sisters' education at the School of Nursing and covers her school fees and upkeep.

Our Partnership

As the firstborn in his family, everyone in Hamidu’s family looks up to him and expects him to care for them. However, he does not make enough money to financially support his entire family. Therefore, he needs to work extra hard to meet the demands and is looking for ways to improve his business. Hamidu is happy with the opportunity to work with Leadership Initiatives because he believes that through this organization, he can learn a lot about running his startup business, start making a profit, and begin employing more people.

In his words, “If someone had told me that I would be working with Leadership Initiatives, I wouldn't have believed it. Seeing the competition at the orientation, I had already given up hope. However, when I was informed that I had been selected, I was extremely happy. I hope to become a one-stop barbershop in Bauchi and beyond. Additionally, I aspire to employ more people from my community.”

My Grant
Proposal

H.M.B. Barbing Salon is a Barber Shop, providing expert hair services at a reasonable price. Hamidu Mohammed Bukar has experience as an apprentice for another barber, sparking his passion to open his own shop.

H.M.B. Barbing Salon is ultimately going to be more successful than the competition due to Hamidu’s personal approach and commitment to quality. Hamidu is bringing customers from his previous job and plans to build his consumer base from there. This will be simple due to the location having heavy foot traffic and the marketing materials created. Hamidu is aware of the challenges he could potentially face, but his dedication and proactive planning sets him up for success.

At H.M.B. Barbing Salon, we want to offer simple, yet high-quality, services. Hamidu plans on single-handedly ensuring individualized customer attention and expert service. As the business grows, the plan is to introduce additional services and employees in order to enhance the salon’s offerings. His goal for the future is to create job opportunities and contribute to community growth.

My Grant Proposal
Presentation

In the International Leadership and Business Internship, I worked directly with some of the world’s leading developmental experts in order to build my partners business and brand.

At the conclusion of this internship, our team pitched the final proposal to a panel of esteemed judges from the Leadership Initiatives Nigerian Development Team and the Leadership Initiatives Grant Committee. This formal pitch allowed our team to practice our skills and utilize our entrepreneurial toolkit, all while showcasing our efforts to transform the business we partnered with.

At the end of the pitch, we were able to receive feedback on our proposal for our business partner. Over the next year, our business partner’s venture will be made into reality and monitored for sustained success and growth.

Internship Highlights

Our team began the business development process by having a one-on-one Zoom call directly with our business partner, Hamidu Mohammed Bukar, and our Nigerian project coordinator to ensure productive collaboration.

We learned more about their life, family, and desires for the proposed business venture, as well as the challenges they were facing. By discussing first-hand the challenges our partner faced, our team successfully and efficiently began to brainstorm solutions to launch their business.

Each morning we held constructive discussions about our ideas, the advice we received the day before, and the timeline necessary to begin implementing our ideas in real-time.

The on-staff project coordinators and business development experts helped facilitate the ideation process and ensured our team asked the right questions to produce tangible results.

I had the unique opportunity to visit the Ugandan Embassy, where I learned about diplomatic relations between Uganda and the United States.

The embassy serves as a hub for collaboration with partner countries and international organizations, which facilitates the creation of solutions to address global issues, such as poverty, gender inequality, and climate change.

Ugandan diplomats and officials work closely with local communities to identify needs and design programs that empower individuals and enhance overall societal well-being. This community-centered problem-solving is something my team and I aspired towards while crafting our business proposal.

I also visited the Embassy of Switzerland to learn about the role that Switzerland plays in domestic and international development work. We discussed critical topics including investments, international trade, and human rights.

While touring the embassy, I learned about the wide range of policy issues and gained a better understanding of the embassy’s role in international development through sustainable and inclusive initiatives.

My visit to the Embassy of Switzerland was not only educational, but inspiring. It allowed me to see Switzerland’s pivotal role in advancing international development and how I can implement their ideals into my own work.

Our team met with leading experts in the fields of business and economic development from Johns Hopkins University, the State Department, and GlobalGiving.

One such expert was Carla Brooks, Business and Development Officer at Johns Hopkins Center for Communications Program. She provided us with a crash course in advertising and marketing, in which we learned essential components of an effective marketing campaign.

Our work with Ms. Brooks was essential in preparing us for our culminating pitch deck presentation. With her and other expert guidance, we streamlined our initial ideas to further our efforts in launching the venture our business partner envisioned.

By the end of the week, we had incorporated the advice of leading experts from across the globe for our business proposal to empower and transform the life of our business partner.
