Advanced Law & Trial Internship Summit
The Advanced Law & Trial Internship Summit is a first-of-its-kind program that allows motivated high school students to intern with Goodwin Weber PLLC on cases of national importance.
In this accelerated internship, students will spend fourteen days working on one of two cases. This year students can choose between a gender discrimination case involving a high ranking federal agent who reported misconduct by the highest levels of her agency or a whistleblowing case involving endangered animals and environmental crimes.
These cases contain highly confidential information and will require non-disclosure agreements and background checks from students and parents.
Throughout the internship, students will connect with top law professors and leading attorneys about the cases, sift through legal documents, review evidence, and help prepare the clients for trial. During the conference, students will advocate for their clients virtually to Congressmen and women, senators, and leaders on Capitol Hill - all online.
On the final day, students will conduct pre-trial cross-examination or opening statements to prepare their client for witness testimony or introduce new methods for investigating or prosecuting the case to the client and legal team.
Students will receive letters of recommendation from the lead attorney trying the cases and may have their ideas implemented.

Students will intern for Goodwin Weber PLLC, and learn from one of the nation’s top attorneys, David P. Weber, who is the former Chief Investigator of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and now a lawyer in private practice.
Interns will meet with clients online, review case documents, and help prepare their client’s case. Students will experience the legal profession while working on actual court cases. This will grant each participant a preview of what a future in the field of law would hold for them.
Advocacy to Capitol Hill leaders is one of the most powerful and advantageous ways to advance and impact legislative policy priorities facing our clients and nation. Interns will work to convince lawmakers to publicly support our clients through online meetings.
In 2019, together with David P. Weber and his law firm Goodwin Weber PLLC, students met with a combined 38 congressional offices, directly meeting with 12 members of the House & Senate.
Interns will virtually work with legal experts to understand current case law facing their clients. While interning, students will be exposed to civil procedure, legal ethics & case research from Georgetown Law Professors & top lawyers in Washington D.C.
Students will walk away from the program with direct experience working with leading legal minds.

Your Role As An Intern
Students will work directly with a jury consultant to create a jury selection profile for the trial and present their methodology to the lead attorney and the client. Students will also build momentum for the case by advocating to leading congressional officials and speak to the national press about their case. Students will be able to do this and more all from their laptops.
The client is facing employment discrimination and reprisal in her attempts for a promotion. She was not selected for the position because she was supposedly not the highest qualified. Instead, a male agent was pre-selected for the position, two ranks below her, and who supervised just five law enforcement officers.
This case has the potential to go to the Supreme Court and establish legal precedent in favor of women who face gender discrimination in the workplace, whether it is within this agency or in another field, particularly those in federal law enforcement.
The federal government is supposed to be a “model employer.” If the case is successfully tried, it will be used to ensure equal pay, equal evaluations and equal promotions for millions of women who work within the United States government. This case will change how women advance in American society.
One of the highest-ranking officers in her agency's history is facing discrimination based on her gender. This has hindered her ability to see her child, husband, and make advancements in her chosen career.

The Case
A whistleblower who is attempting to help a federally-protected wildlife species
Federal law has provided whistleblower bounties and substantial penalties against environmental and wildlife criminals for many years. However, these laws have almost never been used.
You will be working as an intern of Goodwin Weber PLLC, to assist in bringing one of the first cases in the nation using these environmental and wildlife fraud statutes. You will assist Goodwin Weber PLLC in successfully prosecuting the corporations or individuals moving endangered species and their remains across international borders. You will also attempt to seize vehicles used for transport (ships, airplanes and commercial vehicles), as well as to obtain substantial civil money penalties against a large multinational corporation that has been implicated in the fraud. The corporation is known throughout the world and plays a role in the life of almost every American citizen.
The United States government provides a monetary incentive to whistleblowers for reporting illicit activity by international companies trafficking endangered species. Litigating these cases will send a powerful message to companies profiteering from the killing of endangered animals. It will also provide the whistleblower client a bounty for having come forward, which will then allow for funding for future wildlife investigations and cases to be brought. This will cause a domino effect enabling future wildlife protection cases to be funded going forward.
Your Role As An Intern
Through online education, you will help attorneys from Goodwin Weber PLLC work with whistleblowers and a well known non-profit organization to prosecute a case against a major multinational company supporting the illegal importation of the remains of protected wildlife. You will also advocate to Congressional Officials on behalf of environmental and wildlife whistleblowers.

David Paul Weber is the former Assistant Inspector General at the Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
In this role, David served as the SEC’s Chief Investigator and directed all criminal, civil, and administrative investigations into fraud, waste, or abuse concerning SEC programs on a nationwide basis. David’s notable cases included reporting misconduct in the Bernard L. Madoff and R. Allen Stanford investigations. Mr. Weber now uses this skill set to assist and defend clients and to investigate wrongdoing in private practice.
As one recent example, in Winter and Summer 2018, David represented a key witness in the United States v. Paul Manafort criminal prosecution and grand jury investigations and successfully obtained full immunity for his client in exchange for his client’s cooperation and testimony against Mr. Manafort, the President’s former campaign chairman. Ultimately, David’s lawyering, in part, played a role in Manafort’s guilty plea in September 2018 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Weber was a whistleblower who reported allegations about foreign espionage against the stock exchanges, and misconduct in the Bernard L. Madoff and R. Allen Stanford Ponzi scheme investigations. He was terminated months later for supposedly unrelated reasons. He sued the SEC, claiming wrongful termination and retaliation against him for coming forward as a whistleblower. In June 2013, the SEC settled with Weber his whistleblower protection and U.S. District Court lawsuits by reinstating him and paying him $580,000, one of the largest federal whistleblower settlements in US history.
On July 30, 2015, Weber was recognized by six United States Senators and one member of the House of Representatives at the First Congressional Celebration of National Whistleblower Appreciation Day. Weber is now in private practice of law and is a Lecturer and Academic Director of Fraud Management Programs at the University of Maryland, College Park.
In 2015-2016, Weber served as the banking expert who assisted journalists in reviewing information now known as the Panama Papers, pertaining to hundreds of current and former world leaders. In 2017-2018, Weber presented findings from the Paradise Papers, which has now implicated some of the largest accounting firms in the world.
In Spring 2017, Weber was nominated for the American Accounting Association, Forensic Accounting Section, Best Teaching Innovation Award, for training students how to prepare Reports of Investigation into subjects identified in the Panama Papers.
In April 2017, the Panama Papers investigation was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting.
He is married to Julie Goodwin Weber, a tax, estates and trusts attorney, and has four children.

Sarah Stiles joined the Georgetown University sociology faculty in 2007. Prior to that, she taught at American University for eight years where she was Director of the Leadership Program in the School of Public Affairs. She met Marshall Bailly at American and has been proud to work with him ever since.
Professor Stiles specializes in courses on law and social entrepreneurship. She regularly partners with both the law school and the business school. Professor Stiles has won numerous awards for her teaching and student engagement. She currently is working on an effort to promote well-being among students. She believes if we are truly serious about changing the world for the better, we must be at our best, mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Professor Stiles holds a Ph.D. in political science from Boston University, a JD from Northeastern University, an MA in Spanish literature from New York University, and a BA in Spanish from Southern Methodist University.

Daniel has deep knowledge of criminal, civil and internal investigations and can leverage that knowledge with the needs and reputation of his clients at the forefront. Daniel focuses his practice on white collar criminal matters, complex criminal and civil litigation, internal corporate investigations, implementation of compliance programs, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations, domestic and international advisory matters, and internal corporate investigations. In the course of his career, he has handled investigations initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice, Securities and Exchange Commission, and local state and federal law enforcement agencies.
Prior to entering private practice, Daniel held several positions with the Department of Justice. At the DOJ, he was associate deputy attorney general in the executive office for national security and an assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he was chief of the transnational and major crimes section and chief of the criminal division. In addition, he was assistant inspector general for investigations for the CIA, where he investigated allegations of fraud, waste and abuse involving CIA programs, personnel and resources. Before joining the DOJ, Daniel was a law professor at the University of Michigan School of Law and Antioch Law School.

Dan Pond is a criminal defense attorney who has dedicated his career to working as a public defender representing indigent people at all stages of the criminal justice system, from initial arrest through trial and incarceration, and eventually back into the community. Earning his JD from Northeastern University School of Law in 2010, Dan became a trial attorney for Massachusetts’ Committee for Public Counsel Services, representing poor people accused of crimes in the trial courts of Brockton, MA until 2015.
He has also been a public defender in Pittsburgh, PA (2016). Since January 2017, he has been in the Prisoner and Re-Entry Legal Services division of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia.
In this role, Dan has shifted his practice away from defending clients against the formidable resources of the prosecution at the trial level and re-focused on representing and assisting incarcerated people in their applications for release on parole from lengthy felony sentences as well as recently released people as they attempt to overcome the often devastating hurdles of re-entry. Dan also holds a Bachelors degree in Theology from Boston College (2001) and a Masters Degree in Theology from La Salle University (2005).

Mr. Stewart grew up in the drug-infested streets of the District of Columbia and struggled with two alcoholic parents in the household. He became a product of the juvenile justice system at the tender age of 9 years old and placed in foster care at 13 years old. Ultimately, this led to his introduction to the revolving door of incarceration until his parole from Lorton Reformatory in 1985. Since returning to the community:
Mr. Stewart has met every single challenge he has faced including drug use. He is an active member of AA, NA and has been drug and alcohol-free for 23 years and sponsors various support groups throughout the Metropolitan area, such as The Reentry Networks Community Focus Group and a weekly peer to peer mentoring group. Mr. Stewart understands that DC is home to about 60,000 people who have had some involvement with the criminal justice system, many of them previously incarcerated for non-violent and minor offenses. Yet, these individuals face many barriers when returning to the community.
Mr. Stewart cares about the quality of life for returning citizens who have paid their debt to society and who should have all their right’s as a US Citizen restored. This includes rights for equal employment, housing, mental health services, public assistance, heads of households and substance use treatment. Mr. Stewart has been fighting and advocating for social justice in DC for the past 20 years and he continues to establish relationships, organize and serve the re-entry community.

Kunde leads the development and execution of a comprehensive government and public affairs engagement strategy for Ferrero in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.
Kunde joined Ferrero from food service distribution company Sysco, where he served as v.p. of government relations since April 2015. In this role, Chip led government relations efforts to promote and protect Sysco’s public policy interests at the local, state, federal and international levels. Prior to Sysco, Kunde was senior v.p. of government relations at Darden Restaurants. In addition to his corporate experience, Chip has held leadership positions at several national and state trade associations, including the International Dairy Foods Association, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the Connecticut Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.

Born and raised in northern California, I am an ABC (American-born Chinese) of Hakka heritage and speak Chinese and English. As an Assistant Director of Admissions at Yale University’s Undergraduate Admissions Office, I am very familiar with high schools in the northern California and Washington DC regions.
I love working with students! As an admissions officer at Yale, I loved seeing students on campus that I had “met” (on paper) through the application process. Since then, I have continued to work alongside American and Chinese students who have interned in my workplaces, in the private sector, government, and NGOs, both in the U.S. and in China (I worked in Beijing for 3 years).
In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my husband, Charlie, and our 2-year-old Golden Retriever puppy, Zebedee. Some of my hobbies include triathlons, guitar, and eating out!

Shawn McShay serves as the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Financial Aid at Boston College Law School. Previously, he was the Assistant Dean of Admissions at the Washington and Lee University School of Law. In addition, Dean McShay has served as Senior Director of Enrollment at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, and Assistant Director of Admissions at Fordham University Law School.
Dean McShay holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan College. I am a Former Admissions Evaluator at Brown University and have been working in college admissions for almost a decade. I have enjoyed counseling hundreds of students through the college admissions process as the Director of College Counseling and Associate Director of College Counseling at various independent schools in Maryland. My knowledge of selective college admissions has only increased through membership in NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) and PCACAC (Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling) and travel to professional conferences and campus visits.
I also love teaching students and have taught US history, American government, French and psychology classes in the past. My foray into education began with a year abroad in South Korea teaching ESL.
I have my BA from the Pennsylvania State University in History and French, MA from Columbia University in French Studies, and a MAT from Brown University in Secondary Education. I lived abroad in Paris for three years and take every opportunity to return to France as often as possible.
When I am not advising students about the college admissions process, I am an avid knitter, weaver, baker, and hiker.

A former National Bar Association“Young Lawyer of the Year” and “Top 40 Lawyer Under 40”, Reginald A. McGahee became an Assistant Dean at Howard University School of Law at the age of 26. He currently serves as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions and is well known for his innovative ideas and dedication to helping shape the future of the law school.
A Georgia native, Dean McGahee graduated South Carolina State University (“SCSU”) with honors with dual degrees in English and Political Science. While at SCSU, he traveled the country to represent his undergrad, was selected to serve as a Washington DC Capitol Intern, served as the Student Director of the South Carolina Legislative Black and was selected as a fellow at the University of Virginia Ralph Bunche Summer Institute in the area of political science for his research in group utility heuristics in the African American Community.
In addition to his responsibilities as Associate Dean, Reginald is a former partner at Mincey, Battle and McGahee, LLP, where he negotiated contracts for professional athletes. Dean McGahee has spoken internationally in Brazil, Switzerland, Canada, France, London, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates and at over 100 events domestically. Summer program students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a college admissions expert. They will help walk students through the ins-and-outs of college applications, essay writing, and scholarships.

Students who participate in any of Leadership Initiatives Youth Development Programs will have the opportunity to have two letters of recommendation written for them from any Leadership Initiatives staff member, including the Executive Director Marshall Bailly.
Students that participated in the International Leadership and Business Summit can ask for letters of recommendation from their business partner or translator. Students of the Advanced Law and Trial Summit can request letters from the programs directors or lawyers they are interning with for letters of recommendation.
Students of the Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit can ask the patients they diagnose or the doctors they work with for letters of recommendation. Students receive glowing and personal letters of recommendation from individuals whose lives they impacted and professionals they have partnered with.

Students will receive customized web pages based on which program they attend.
web pages include a portfolio that outlines the real court case each student
worked on, showcasing their actual internship with Goodwin Weber PLLC and their work advocating for clients on Capitol Hill.
Law Program
web pages showcase the student's internship with a business in the
developing world and their solution development presentation to members of the United Nations, Harvard's University Admissions Panel, and the US Pentagon.
Business Program
web pages include a full video of each student diagnosing a real patient
in the developing world using VR technology, the CPR, AED, and First Aid certification awarded by the Red Cross of America, and each student's work at the Howard University Medical Simulation Center.
Medical Program
A link to the website will be included in each student's personal letter of recommendation, allowing colleges to discover firsthand the once-in-a-lifetime experience each student has had alongside Leadership Initiatives.

Leadership Initiatives has partnered with top universities around the country to form a panel of college admissions officers to provide students with a firsthand account on how universities select their incoming students.
Students attend an exclusive Question and Answer Session with College Admissions Officers from Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, George Washington, and American University. These experts will discuss the basics of filling out your application, content for inclusion and exclusion, what activities stand out the most in student applications, and techniques to write a memorable application essay.
Participants in each program attend a specific graduate-level admissions panel to plan ahead to Law School, Medical School, and Business School.
No other program in the country offers pre-professional school advice directly from admissions officers, allowing students to plan ahead to their future careers and shape their path to success.
Elite College Admissions Panels
Leadership Initiatives partners summer program students with a US-based mentor of their choice from the Leadership Initiatives community of supporters.
Potential mentorship partners include executives at some of the Country’s most successful businesses, top legal experts in Washington, D.C., Harvard Staff and Faculty, former State Department officials, Georgetown University Professors, NASA scientists, Federal Law Enforcement Officers, and more.
Over the course of 18 months, these mentors work with students to help navigate the way to their future colleges and careers.
Students receive the perceptive, wisdom, and life advice from these highly successful mentors to aid in their transition to college and their career beyond.
Career Mentorship Program
Leadership Initiatives has worked with high school seniors and current undergraduates to apply for scholarships for over two decades. Seniors who utilize our scholarship assistance program to apply for 12 scholarships, that we approve and professionally edit have a 38% chance of receiving a scholarship of at least $500 up to $62,000.
In 2020, Leadership Initiatives scholarship assistance program helped students to receive over $6.92 million dollars in financial aid for all four years of college.

Scholarship Application Assistance
Current college students know first hand the best and worst qualities of their respective university, as well as the time-consuming and often stressful application process. Leadership Initiatives pairs summer program students with current college students from the school of their choice to get the most personal and authentic image of their dream school.
Students will have one-on-one calls with their college mentor to answer any questions, discuss the qualities of the college, and receive advice on the application process. LI has past students and current interns at the nations top colleges, as well as access to students at nearly every US college. These calls act as an exceptional resource during the college-decision period of every student’s life.
Summer program students also have the opportunity to network with past participants, who attend the nation's foremost universities, received internships at the UN, with US congressional officials, and many leading businesses nationwide.
These leaders will share the steps they took to achieve these goals and offer advice for your own personal journey into the university and career of your choosing.
