AI & Emerging Technology Internship
Become The Future Of Medicine
The Program
In Leadership Initiatives' Advanced Medical Neuroscience Internship, students work directly with Dr. Giordano, the Chief of Georgetown's Neuroethics Studies Program and Executive Director of the Institute for Biodefense Research.
Interns spend an entire week working alongside the nation's top Artificial Intelligence and Biomedical engineers. Over the course of the week, students conduct experiments and research into how AI is helping to diagnose and determine patient treatments, analyze patient biology, improve movement related to injuries, birth defects, or neurological or cardiovascular disease, and help engineers design and create biomedical devices and systems that are more precise and efficient.
For their final project, interns will design an artificial arm for a patient in rural Namibia who lost their limb due to a snake bite by the Kunene Coral Snake. Internship teams will create their artificial arm using Artificial Intelligence a 3D printing machine, and program it for their patient. They will present their working arm to a team of medical doctors for their final project. Approved arms will be shipped to their patient in rural Namibia.
Interns will work in teams to design innovative AI-based proposals that address real-world challenges. Each team will present its proposal and approved projects will be submitted to Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology Lab for publication.
Research Project
Students will also work closely with some of the country’s top AI and tech engineers. By collaborating directly with these experts, interns gain valuable mentorship, learn industry best practices, and get real-world insights into AI’s capabilities and challenges.
Work with Experts
Interns will dive into AI by conducting experiments and researching its role in shaping innovation across sectors like business, healthcare, and more. These hands-on experiments will help students understand AI applications and AI's growing impact in our daily lives.

2023 Advanced Medical Neuroscience Internship
"I found Dr. Giordano's lecture on the ethics and intricacies of big data to be eye opening, and important not just to those with a pre-med or neuroscience focus, but to those who deal with information in the digital sphere - which is everyone. It is such a complex issue that is increasingly concerning, yet I think that we as individuals feel behind in our understanding of the potentially negative impacts of the emerging digital world. "
Leadership Initiatives hosts neuroscientists, surgeons, and members of research institutions from across the globe to share skills and insights into ongoing research. The 2021 program includes experts from the Georgetown University Medical Center's Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging, Lab for Relational Cognition, Pellegrino Center, Brain Bank, and Movement Disorders Program; the Gallaudet University Brain and Language Lab; and the Laboratory for Cognition and Neural Stimulation at the University of Pennsylvania.
Explore the brain sciences and a career in medicine
Interns will gain introductory experience in various AI experiments, including natural language processing by developing chatbots, synthetic bioengineering through AI-assisted genetic design, and robotic automation with AI-driven systems. They will also create immersive virtual reality environments and explore AI applications in accessibility and bionics for assistive technologies. This exposure will equip them with valuable skills and insights into AI's transformative potential across multiple fields.
