Skyler Yoo
Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute
Class of 2028
Kitchener, Ontario
As a full IB student, my drive to impact neuroscience was born from watching my grandmother's battle with Alzheimer's — grief that became determination and gave my academic path clear purpose. I channeled that purpose into building an AI-based cognitive screening app that detects early cognitive decline through memory games and machine-learning algorithms, teaching myself Python through Harvard's CS50 AI to create it from the ground up.
I founded my school's Neuroscience Club and established my region's first Brain Bee chapter, connecting students with university researchers and fostering STEM curiosity in my community. Through NeuroVoices, my neuroscience podcast, I translate complex research into accessible conversations about prevention and early detection. As a research mentee in the Multisensory Brain and Cognition Lab at the University of Waterloo, I explore brain–computer interface applications while building graduate-level research skills.
Maintaining a 4.7 GPA across these initiatives, I aspire to integrate research, technology, and leadership to make brain health more proactive and equitable worldwide. I also serve as Student Trustee, representing over 64,000 students and ensuring their voices reach the board level.
